Celebrating my first award!

Feeling honoured that my picture ‘Shared Home’ won the ‘Award for the Best Photo of Czech Nature’.
The festive ceremony took place in the Prague Castle on April 22.
To my surprise I discovered that four more pictures of mine are included in the exhibition ‘Where Nature Reigns’, which can be visited until 17.8.2025 in the Theresian Wing of the Old Royal Castle.
My congratulations to all other winners and a big Thank You @czechphotocz for the great opportunity!

Photographing nesting birds requires time, patience, and responsibility. Though this family bred in a public area, I spent weeks gaining their trust and helped protect their site with a small fence. The male, usually alert and defensive, even left for a swim when I arrived — a sign that true trust had been built. Keeping a respectful distance is essential to give them the space and security they need.

RESILIENCE...

Recently, I stumbled upon this Raccoon image taken more than 10 years ago – long before I fell in love with wildlife photography. But this encounter was one of the key moments that triggered my later passion for it.

Back then, I was going through a difficult time, and watching them was fun – it gave me a break and lifted my mood. But what fascinated me most wasn’t just the cuteness or the entertainment, but their incredible adaptability and resilience.

They were thriving in a place that clearly wasn’t made for them – and not just surviving, but actually doing pretty well. Researchers have found that Raccoons living in urban, non-traditional habitats are often more clever than their rural counterparts. They grow through their challenges, developing better problem-solving skills because they constantly have to adapt to new and unpredictable conditions.

That really stuck with me. Somehow, it helped me cope at the time – and it planted a seed. To me, watching wildlife isn’t just about beauty or behaviour - it’s also about what we can learn from it.

Seals are semiaquatic mammals, with the intriguing habit of splitting their time between the coast and the open sea, following the rhythm of the tides. This moment unfolded on a small, secluded beach in North Wales. As the tide began to rise, this female seal was the first to leave the shore. Just as she reached the water’s edge, a foamy wave swept in, curving around her body like a soft embrace, as if the sea was welcoming her back.

A BIRD LIKE A BUTTERFLY

What I miss most after leaving Britain are the seabirds—even though I didn’t live by the coast. But when I moved to Czechia, I was excited to finally see a Wallcreeper.

Not far from where I live now, we usually get one or two individuals at a single site in winter, and seeing one for the second season still felt very special. Getting a decent photo is actually not that hard—but creating something different or unique? That’s the real challenge here. The location is quite restricted, and most views are straight-on, with a yellowish rock wall as the backdrop.

At one point, I climbed the quarry wall, trying to catch a side view and isolate it from the background—but the sand had other plans, and I slid down before I even got close. 😂 So I kept coming back. Watching. Waiting. Until finally—there it was. Passing a rock edge just wide enough, and just briefly enough, to spread its wings like a butterfly. 🦋

SHAKE IT OFF

Great crested grebes shake off water quite often—and if you’re not familiar with their behaviour, it can seem completely unpredictable. It’s something they do as part of their regular routine, but it can also happen after pair-bonding rituals, which they perform throughout much of the year, peaking between February and April.

If you’re out watching or photographing them at this time of year—especially hoping to catch a glimpse of their incredible courtship display—just be mindful not to get too close. Even small disturbances can throw them off, not only at nesting sites but during the entire breeding process. I always remind myself that getting the shot should never come at the birds’ expense.

Just as grebes naturally shake off water, we should also strive to shake off bad habits. Maintaining a respectful distance and staying well covered not only benefits the birds, but also gives us the best chance to observe their natural behaviour without causing disturbance.

I’m over the moon to share that my image “Shared Home” has been nominated in the Czech Nature Photo competition, in the category “Best Photograph of Czech Nature.” @czechphotoczs

Last November, I set out to explore the wetlands of Eastern Moravia and became increasingly fascinated by the interplay between Great White Egrets and (mainly) Black-headed Gulls. These birds don’t just coexist—they also benefit from one another: gulls may stir up prey or alert egrets to danger, while the egrets’ focused hunting methods can reveal feeding opportunities for the gulls. This kind of neighbourhood reduces competition and creates subtle synergies that help sustain a shared habitat.

To portray the birds' contrasting hunting styles—one rooted in patience and precision, the other in motion and opportunism—I chose a longer shutter speed: just long enough to blur the gulls’ flight formation, yet short enough to keep the still-standing egrets crisp and defined.

Ironically, just when everything aligned—the light, the composition, the moment—a young swan drifted into the frame. At first, I thought it had ruined the shot. But then I realised it had completed it.

That’s the beauty of wildlife photography. You can plan all you want, but nature always has the last word—and often, it’s better than anything you imagined.

Grateful for this recognition, and for all the life in front of the lens. 🐦💫

The Urban Explorer 🏰

The Black Redstart moved into our towns and cities around 250 years ago, and now, it’s hard to find one anywhere but human-made spaces. I’ve always loved that about them, so I keep spotting and photographing them in the most random places.

This one was flitting around an old monastery, completely at home on its ancient walls. I loved how light and effortless this female looked, so I went for a high-key image to really bring that out. To me the shadow made this moment even more fleeting - a perfect little trace of her presence before she was off again.

Maybe that’s why I feel drawn to them - I can relate. I’d rather live a bit "wild" in urban spaces than feel too civilised out in the wild. 😂

This heron had its meal secured—until a cunning gull started harassing it mid-flight. Annoyed, the heron opened its beak to protest… and just like that, the fish was gone. The twist? A third gull swooped in and claimed the prize, getting the last laugh—and the last bite! 😆

A glimpse of a hidden pattern...

Fieldfares sometimes fan their tails for balance on thin branches, but they’re also known to do it as a territorial display—warning off any competitors eyeing their precious berries. It happens in a split second: unpredictable, fleeting, and hard to capture. I spent days observing, learning to anticipate the moment, hoping that everything would align perfectly—no twigs in the way, no distractions, just an unobstructed frontal view of their feathers.

On the very last day, with most of the berries gone and the light far from ideal, I finally caught it. The result reveals what’s usually hidden: delicate markings and subtle tones in an almost perfectly symmetrical spread.

These little beings have mastered the art of urban survival, turning challenges into opportunities and proving that even the most misunderstood species plays a vital role in our shared ecosystem—like scavenging the waste we leave behind. Despite their reputation, they are remarkably clean animals, spending much of their time grooming. And when food is scarce, they instinctively drink more water to compensate.

I can’t help but admire their resilience—and, honestly, those cute eyes, too!

Sometimes they even use old nests made by other birds, like corvids, or, as in this case, woodpeckers. Here in the Czech Republic, woodpeckers love to excavate nest holes in residential buildings—not always to the delight of people, but certainly to the delight of many other bird species that breed there in subsequent years. Finding these nest holes while exploring the city, I found it very fascinating—especially since we usually reduce natural space, yet sometimes our constructions inadvertently create room for wildlife. It’s just another reminder that everything in nature is connected, underscoring why protecting biodiversity is so important.

Yet, these owls often surprise us by choosing urban and suburban areas for their daytime retreats. This one was perched in the heart of a village, alongside several others. My highest count in this spot has been 13 individuals so far – a hidden community living quietly among us! Isn't it fascinating how adaptable and elusive they are, even close to human life?

It’s been a long time since I last shared anything here, but I have some exciting news worth breaking the silence. Two of my photographs have been selected as finalists for the British Wildlife Photography Awards and will be published in the twelfth edition of the competition’s book! This recognition means a lot to me, especially after nearly two years during which life had other plans, leaving me with much less time for wildlife photography I love and have missed so deeply.
One featured image is a duet of two Black Guillemots titled "Pas-de-Deux," taken during a trip to Oban. I vividly remember the weather—it was typically Scottish, with the sun stubbornly hidden behind dark grey clouds and almost constant drizzle. The Black Guillemots, which breed in the harbour walls, seemed just as unimpressed by the rain as I was and mostly retreated into their nesting holes. Seeing them for the first time in this unusual urban environment was intriguing, but from a photographic perspective, I felt the trip had started rather disappointingly.
On the second day, I nearly gave up, but then something unexpected and spectacular happened. Two Black guillemots engaged in a courtship display that felt like a dance performance on a stage. They chased and stalked each other back and forth, running in circles, either high-stepping or crouching, with upstretched necks and down-pointed bills, mostly as a pair, sometimes joined by a third bird, all while being quite vocal. This behaviour was not only fascinating to witness but also incredibly entertaining, with moments of almost comical antics.
Though the lighting was far from ideal, the birds’ performance lifted my spirits. It inspired me to take a high-key approach, eliminating the dull background and focusing on their striking features—the vivid red of their feet and beaks—and the distinctive postures that best captured their display.
Long story short: there’s always a reason to head out, no matter the weather. Sometimes, even the most unpromising days can turn out to be winning ones.

They have learned that these are excellent sources of food that they don't even have to chase to catch. They only need to pick up the insects that are crushed or blown up by vehicles. Car parks are basically like fast-food restaurants for Wagtails, where they can get quick and easy meals.
